A framework for a National Association of

Parent Support Groups in Singapore

Introduction:

This document has been produced to set the stage on the ideas and aspirations of a group of active PSG
members who feel that more can be done to nurture and develop the parent’s role as stakeholders in
our future generation’s education.

1. Mission:
To be a focus for parent-stakeholders in Singapore who are interested through pro-active participation to
become full partners in the education of our children.

2. Role:

The aspirations of this group have been set realistically to concentrate on a number of key areas relating
to the needs of PSG and parents, namely:

·        Nurture parent volunteerism in both the school & community

·        Provide an environment for learning, sharing and discussion on subjects relating to the
all-round education of our children

·        Act as a central resource pool and portal for PSG’s, where they will find solutions and ideas
to build stronger home–school relationships

·        Offer constructive feedback to policymakers

·        Provide an understanding of MOE policies and how they relate to the school and community

·        Promote a best practice for PSG’s

3. Membership:

This will initially be an organization run and supported by volunteers made up from the various PSG
membership.  PSG’s will propose candidates to be elected to a council, and appropriate sub-committees.
The aim is not to duplicate the activities of a school PSG at national level, but complement and enhance
them.

Active involvement in this association will be sought by approaching initially the current schools that have
a PSG formed, (some 270 to date)  Schools without a PSG would be canvassed to encourage them to join
in and find out how to set up their own PSG.

There will be an Associate Members category for individual parents and another called Affiliated Members for businesses and other parties who support our cause.

4.
Fees:
- Some funding for administration costs will be required to get the association going.
- A fee of some kind from members, along with a grant possibly from an interested organization should be considered.
